Canada Small Business Financing Program (CSBFP)

The CSBFP is run by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED). The government shares the risk with participating lenders, so they can approve businesses they otherwise might not.

Key points:

  • Total financing of up to $1.15 million per borrower, combining term loans and lines of credit
  • Can be used for equipment, leasehold improvements, real property and some working capital and intangible assets
  • A one-time 2% registration fee on the loan amount
  • Interest rates are capped relative to the lender’s prime rate
  • Apply through a participating bank or credit union

The $1.15 million ceiling is set out in section 7 of the Canada Small Business Financing Act, and the program sets separate maximums within it for categories such as lines of credit.

BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada)

BDC is a federal Crown corporation focused exclusively on entrepreneurs. It offers working capital loans, technology financing, purchase financing and advisory services, and often works alongside private lenders.

Futurpreneur Canada

A national non-profit offering startup financing and mentorship for young entrepreneurs, often in partnership with BDC.

Regional development agencies

Federal agencies such as PrairiesCan, FedDev Ontario, ACOA, CED Quebec and PacifiCan support businesses in their regions with loans and funding for specific growth projects.

Provincial programs

Most provinces offer their own funding and advisory programs. Check your provincial government’s business website and Innovation Canada’s online program finder.
